I have been absolutely obsessed with Supergirl (SG). I don’t remember why I held off for so long on watching this show. Oh yeah, because I thought it would be silly and I am not very taken with the Superman story. Or i felt like DC did a terrible job with the Superman story (aside from casting Henry Cavill *heart eye emoji*). After much pressure from my roommate and a couple friends telling me how good it is, I finally caved.
OMG this is probably the fastest I’ve binged a show in awhile. It is an excellent show for a lot of reasons. Here are some of my favorite parts about the show:
1.) They actually give a satisfying explanation for the whole “you can’t recognize a super hero when they put glasses on, even though you literally erected statues in their honor” thing. I thought this was supposed to be a big joke like *wink* *wink* we all know who you really are but we are respecting your privacy. But we are actually supposed to believe that the people who see these people day in and day out don’t recognize that they are an alien super hero? They just never had an explanation that absolved such a glaring plot hole. Finally Supergirl gave us the answer we’ve all been waiting for… okay I’ve been waiting for. Basically Kara (SG’s alter ego) is the assistant for CatGrant a media mogul who built her company from the ground up. Cat wants an interview with SG, but Kara is worried Cat will recognize SG as her assistant, and her cover will be blown. Jimmy Olson the photo journalist who is best buds with Superman, and who now works in National City for Cat Grant, convinces her to do it. His argument: Cat isn’t going to recognize SG as Kara because Cat doesn’t see Kara at all. Which is so true! We so very rarely really see people, and finally this is an explanation I really understand and love.
2.) Not only is SG’s outfit actually practical, they also explain how she gets such strong cape that can withstand all the insane things that happens to it. It is Superman’s baby blanket from krypton. All the women’s outfits are practical too. Alex Danver’s- Kara’s adoptive sister who works for a secret government agency hunting down rabid aliens- her outfits are awesome and tactical too. There are no impractical outfits for fighting crime, it is really refreshing.
3.) All the women are capable and talented and they have a wide varieties of personalities. I think it so refreshing how the women are multi-dimensional. In a lot of shows they only let us see one side of the female characters. Women are only allowed to be damsels or warriors in mainstream television, but SG shows women who are both tough and girly. Amazing business women who would traditional be called b*tches, but who are also so smart, understanding, and caring. So often women are condemned if they lean too far either way. I’ve been called too nice and told i was being too tough in the same day without changing my behavior so… I have to say it is refreshing to see women who are smart, competent, vulnerable, witty, awesome, and beautiful all across this show.
4.) The relationships. I love SG’s and her sisters Alex relationship. It is complicated but at the end of the day they care so much for each other and that really shows. The romantic relationships are also varied and interesting. SG’s relationship to Superman is really interesting because they are flesh and blood family, Also how people handle rejection is really refreshing, when a guy hears No he actually backs off and eventually when he takes some time to himself, he is able to resume his friendship with SG. Not a narrative we see very often.
5.) The optimistic tone. A lot of bad things happen on this show, both supernatural and just everyday awful stuff, but they tackle it with a serious but optimistic tone. In what is sure to be dark times ahead it is nice to see an optimistic story that treats women really well. Plus the president in SG is a women :).
This show is seriously amazing and while it is only about halfway through the second season, but I have high hopes for the show. I’m looking forward to see where the show goes. If you are looking for a show to redeem your faith in DC, I would highly recommend watching this show!
Let me know if you love or hate Supergirl in the comments, I’m curious to see what people think.
