If you Google “what is a geek” this is the first thing that pops up.
That seems… a bit harsh. I am defining Geek here so that we are all on the same page, and in a way that is more culturally relevant. I certainly wouldn’t call myself unfashionable or socially inept (okay maybe a little), and it definitely doesn’t only apply to computer-obsessed people. Being a geek is about so much more. I honestly think that Simon Pegg said it best with this quote:
Now that we have that cleared up the real work can begin. *she rubs her hands together and laughs maniacally* Just kidding, there’s nothing particularly evil about this. Now that you’ve read Simon Pegg’s brilliant quote, you can see that being a geek is more about honesty than anything else. The “…never having to play it cool about how much you like something.” part is my favorite. This is also so broad that he could be talking about anything. He’s not just referring to things that would fall into the traditional geek categories of sci-fi/fantasy/computer but about everything that you happen to feel passionately about. You can geek out over baking, makeup, flowers, coffee, scotch, and on and on and on. You can geek out about truly anything.
I hope you have interests you geek out about too. Things that you are so passionate about that you can’t help but share them with the people closest to you. Don’t be afraid to call yourself a geek either. It is so fucking liberating, when you stop apologizing for the things that bring you joy and just revel in them (still working on the stopping apologizing thing). The people that you share these things with, might not always understand what it is exactly that you feel so passionately about. However if they are good friends they will listen and be happy for you. They may even occasionally participate in whatever geeky activity you are enthusiastically shoving down their throats (in the best possible way). In return when they geek out to you about their love of something you will listen enthusiastically and give it a try. You just never know what your next great love will be. Most of the things I am truly passionate about in life were introduced to me by a dear friend. That is how I found Hamilton, which has been one of the biggest influences of this year, possibly my life (more on that later).
I like the version of geek that we’ve defined here, maybe some day Google will read:
1. Someone who is passionate about any number of subjects.
2. Someone who is honest and unapologetic of his or her loves and interests.
3. A carnival performer who performs wild or disgusting acts
1. The act of ardently talking about someone/thing/place you love.
I was geeking out over my love of gardening to my date.
Or something like that.
What are the things you geek out about?
